In Vancouver, a deck spends months wet. Without care, wood turns gray, grows moss, and gets dangerously slick. A little fall prep goes a long way.
1. Clear it off
Move furniture and planters, and sweep out leaves and needles, especially between boards. Trapped debris holds moisture against the wood.
2. Clean it gently
Wood is soft. Too much pressure raises the grain and leaves fuzzy, splintered boards. We use low pressure with a wood-safe cleaner, then a brightener to bring back the natural color.
3. Let it dry
Wood needs a couple of dry days before sealing. In our climate, that usually means late summer or an early-fall dry stretch.
4. Seal it
A good penetrating sealer helps water bead up and roll off instead of soaking in. Most decks need it every two to three years.
Already slick?
Green, slippery boards are a fall hazard. If it's too late to seal this year, a moss treatment and gentle cleaning will still make it safer through winter.
