When is the best time to prune trees in Tacoma?

When is the best time to prune trees in Tacoma?

For most trees around Tacoma, the best time to prune is late winter, while the tree is dormant. But there are a few good exceptions, and one thing you can do any time of year.

Why late winter works best

With the leaves gone, it's easy to see the tree's structure: crossing branches, weak joints and deadwood stand out. The tree isn't pushing new growth yet, so it has its full energy to seal cuts once spring arrives. Fewer insects and fungi are active in the cold, too.

When to wait

  • Spring growth spurt: avoid heavy pruning while new leaves are coming out. The tree is spending its stored energy, and big cuts stress it most then.
  • Flowering trees like cherries and dogwoods: prune right after they bloom, or you'll cut off next year's flowers.
  • Maples and birches drip sap if pruned in late winter. It looks dramatic, but it doesn't hurt the tree. Some owners prefer to prune them in early summer instead.

Any time of year

Dead, broken or hanging branches should come down as soon as you spot them, especially over a roof, driveway or play area. Don't wait for the "right season" on safety.

How much is too much?

A good rule is to remove no more than about a quarter of a tree's leafy canopy in one year. And please don't "top" a tree (cutting the main trunk back to stubs). It looks tidy for a season, then grows back weak and dangerous.
