7 signs a tree near your house could be dangerous

Most trees are perfectly healthy. But a few warning signs mean it's time for a professional to take a look, before the next big wind decides for you.

  1. Dead or bare branches high in the crown, especially over the roof.
  2. Cracks or splits in the trunk or where big limbs join it.
  3. A new lean. A tree that has always leaned is often fine. One that started leaning recently, with soil lifting on one side, is not.
  4. Mushrooms or fungus growing at the base or on the trunk, a common sign of decay inside.
  5. Hollow spots or soft, crumbly wood.
  6. Hangers: broken branches caught up in the tree, waiting to fall.
  7. Damaged roots from digging, paving or construction near the tree.

What to do next

Take a few photos and text them to us. Often we can tell you right away whether it needs attention. If it does, we'll come out for a free look and give you a written price. If it's healthy, we'll tell you that too.

Never try to cut anything near power lines yourself. Call your utility company first.

Not sure about a tree?

We'll take a look for free and give you an honest answer, even if the answer is "leave it alone."
