Most trees are perfectly healthy. But a few warning signs mean it's time for a professional to take a look, before the next big wind decides for you.
- Dead or bare branches high in the crown, especially over the roof.
- Cracks or splits in the trunk or where big limbs join it.
- A new lean. A tree that has always leaned is often fine. One that started leaning recently, with soil lifting on one side, is not.
- Mushrooms or fungus growing at the base or on the trunk, a common sign of decay inside.
- Hollow spots or soft, crumbly wood.
- Hangers: broken branches caught up in the tree, waiting to fall.
- Damaged roots from digging, paving or construction near the tree.
What to do next
Take a few photos and text them to us. Often we can tell you right away whether it needs attention. If it does, we'll come out for a free look and give you a written price. If it's healthy, we'll tell you that too.
Never try to cut anything near power lines yourself. Call your utility company first.
